Police recently arrested a man in Petaluma and accused him of causing a crash due to driving while under the influence in California. The car collision took place early in the morning on a Friday. The accident occurred at Petaluma Boulevard South and Crystal Lane.
How the DUI arrest happened
The alleged DUI accident happened at about 12:30 a.m. Police said a 47-year-old man was driving and suddenly collided with a roundabout. His car then allegedly hit a light post, causing the post to fall over.
Authorities said the man showed signs of being alcohol-impaired after the collision. They arrested the man for allegedly driving under the influence. While he was waiting to be transported to jail, the man underwent breath tests that reportedly showed his blood alcohol level was twice the state’s legal limit. Police said people arrested for DUI for the first time face penalties and fines totaling $13,500 on average, and their driver’s licenses will also be suspended.
How an attorney can help
The man facing a DUI charge in California may choose to proceed to trial to fight any criminal charge. During the trial, prosecutors have to prove the charge beyond a reasonable doubt before a conviction can be secured. This high standard is in place to protect innocent individuals from being convicted of crimes they did not commit. Alternatively, the man might pursue a plea deal with prosecutors, as this may lead to a lighter charge and sentence than what he may have received following a guilty finding in court. An attorney will pursue the most personally favorable outcome for the defendant given the circumstances surrounding his case.
