A woman is expected to be arrested on a charge of driving under the influence, or DUI, following a recent California car crash. The accident took place along Interstate 5. The alleged DUI accident occurred during the early morning hours on Sunday.
Events leading to the incident
The alleged drunk driving accident occurred at around 3 a.m. Police said a 20-year-old woman was attempting to make a turn onto Interstate 5. In doing so, she apparently struck an embankment.
Authorities reported that the woman’s car flipped over due to the impact. The car then hit a tree. Two passengers in the car, 19 and 22 years of age, were transported to a medical center with major injuries. Meanwhile, the driver suffered moderate injuries. Police said they would arrest her on a DUI charge following her release from the medical center.
How an attorney can help
In facing a charge of DUI the accused woman has a couple of options. She may go to trial to fight the accusations, or she may pursue a plea deal. If she goes to trial, California prosecutors must prove her charge beyond a reasonable doubt — which can be a challenging feat – before a conviction can be secured. Seeking a plea deal may be a better option if the prosecution appears to have strong evidence to support the DUI charge, as a plea deal might lead to a lighter sentence than what may result from a guilty verdict at trial. Either way, an attorney can help his or her client choose the most personally favorable outcome given the circumstances surrounding the DUI case.
